4-Star Review from Downbeat Magazine

DownbeatJohn Ephland at Downbeat gave TRI-FI’s new album Staring into the Sun a very nice 4-star review in the April 2014 issue!

“Tri-Fi’s newest collection of originals is the best example yet of their intimate group interplay… Call it a relaxed yet fervent approach to express joy, wonder, surprise. The kind of qualities jazz lovers look for anytime they’re hungry for connection”

TRI-FI 10th Anniversary CD Project

TRI-FIWe’ve been hard at work with TRI-FI working on a brand new album of all original music. We recorded back in May and are currently running a Kickstarter drive to raise the funds to finish the project and release it by early 2014 – that will be the 10th anniversary of our first gigs and recordings as a trio.

Fun Times at Shanghai Jazz

Matthew Fries, Gregory Ryan, Steve Wilson & David NiuYou know, sometimes you play one of those gigs that is just really fun. That seems to happen pretty much every time I play with Steve Wilson.

On Saturday I played trio at the cozy Shanghai Jazz with Steve and bassist, Gregory Ryan (who I work with A LOT at my regular Hillstone spot in NYC). My face still hurts from smiling my way through the whole gig. Here we are posing with owner David Niu after a night of music.

My glowing devil eyes courtesy of low-light iPhone photo quality – sorry…

Mulgrew Miller Birthday Celebration

Mulgrew MillerTuesday, August 13, 2013 – 7:00pm & 9:30pm

I’ve been invited to be a part of a celebration of Mulgrew Miller’s music at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola – part of Jazz at Lincoln Center here in NYC. It’s being held on what would have been Mulgrew’s 58th birthday and will feature some pretty great musicians.

Pianists: Kenny Barron, Johnny O’Neal, Cedar Walton, Anthony Wonsey, Sullivan Fortner, Chris Pattishall, and Matthew Fries

Band: Steve Wilson, saxophone; Duane Eubanks, trumpet; Steve Nelson, vibraphone; Richie Goods, bass; and Rodney Green, drums

Mulgrew’s sudden passing due to a stroke he suffered back in May is heartbreaking to say the least. He was a beautiful gentle-giant of a man and a unparalleled voice on his instrument. JALC expressed the motivation behind this concert very beautifully on their website:

…we believe that “because jazz is rooted in the blues, it inspires us to face adversity with persistent optimism,” and saddened as we are by the loss of Mulgrew Miller, we intend to honor him as he lived – in the joyful spirit of jazz, with great positivity, companionship, and musicality.

I’m so flattered to be a part of this celebration of my friend and mentor. Make a joyful noise.
